Patrick L. Rendon

Biography

Like others at L&K, Pat Rendon has a broad and substantial base of experience. Like many of his colleagues, he was formerly at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue where he specialized in environmental and construction matters. Mr. Rendon also practiced as an in-house attorney at Fluor Corporation, a Fortune 500, international construction company. Because Mr. Rendon is fluent in Spanish, at Fluor he negotiated construction, infrastructure, and project finance contracts valued up to $1.5 billion throughout Latin America which were written in both English and Spanish.

At L&K, Mr. Rendon has focused in litigation and trials. Mr. Rendon has tried cases through to jury verdict and has served as lead appellate counsel before the California Court of Appeal. He has represented clients in a broad range of cases from business and partnership disputes, to real estate and construction disputes, to land use and environmental matters.

In the environmental practice area, Mr. Rendon has represented clients at contaminated sites for over thirty years. This includes representing clients in many of the largest Superfund sites in the Los Angeles area. Mr. Rendon has taken environmental cases through to jury verdict and to the Court of Appeal. Mr. Rendon has also handled CEQA matters and has taken these cases to trial. This has included representing a city in a CEQA lawsuit where the expansion plans of a heavy industrial user were incompatible with the zoning and projected land use plans for an area which were designated for residential and mixed-uses. In his environmental practice, Mr. Rendon routinely interfaces with, and negotiates, mutually acceptable ways to address contamination at operating manufacturing facilities and in connection with the cleanup of such sites so that these may be redeveloped for residential or commercial uses. Mr. Rendon’s background in large construction projects is especially well suited to representing developers of brownfield sites. His expertise in construction and environmental matters enables Mr. Rendon to provide effective and practical advice during the course of developing such sites.

In the construction practice area, Mr. Rendon has represented owners and contractors in claims for delays, acceleration and extra work, and in the litigation arising out of complex construction disputes. These disputes have included a $340 million airport expansion project where the general contractor was terminated for default and a $200 million construction dispute involving a hospital.

In the context of business disputes and real estate development, Mr. Rendon has also represented developers, partners and real estate brokers in litigation in all aspects of real estate development, purchases and sales, and in partnership disputes.

Mr. Rendon also works closely with lawyers in L&K’s Trusts and Estates practice group. He has taken financial abuse cases to trial, through to a jury verdict, and represented clients before the Court of Appeal in such matters.

A substantial part of Mr. Rendon’s practice includes representing clients before regulatory agencies, including the US and California EPA. This experience includes negotiating cleanup levels and plans for contaminated sites and advising clients on the development and transition of such sites from heavy industrial use to mixed and residential uses.
